Twice Born

We learn of the second birth from Jesus
When to Him at night came Nicodemus,
A master of Israel, a Pharisee,
Who knew that Jesus sent from God must be.

Because this teacher he wanted to hear,
To Jesus Christ Nicodemus drew near.
Thus, Jesus taught this ruler of the Jews,
Revealing to him unexpected news.

For if he the kingdom of God would see,
‘Twas required he first born again be.
Nicodemus wondered at this strange thought,
Not exactly the teaching he had sought.

How could someone who had grown old in age
Return to the long-gone earlier stage,
When from his mother’s womb he had come out?
That it would be possible, he did doubt.

How could someone who had grown old in age
Return to the long-gone earlier stage,
When from his mother’s womb he had come out?
That it would be possible, he did doubt.

Jesus then explained what twice born entailed,
So, on this point we need not be derailed.
First comes the natural birth in water,
A child born from his mother and father.

A physical being, bound up in flesh,
(With parts that God did intricately mesh),
Condemned to death by sin and unbelief,
With only one birth, would have no relief.

To this must be added a second birth,
A spiritual one with much greater worth.
It comes when God’s Spirit enters a heart,
Bringing new life, never more to depart.

This birth comes from God, a gift of His love,
Brought by His begotten Son from above.
For each who in Jesus Christ does believe
Does eternal life instantly receive.
